What does this harness do?
This is a plug-n-play harness that converts the factory 9005/9006 headlights of the US-Spec 80 Series Land Cruiser to the H4/H1 quad headlights found in non-US 80s as well as aftermarket one-piece headlights like Depos. The harness is truly plug and play with no other wiring modifications needed.
Why do I need your harness? Can I just use a generic 9006-to-H4 plug from eBay?
Yes and no. In simplistic terms, yes you can simply go low-beam-to-low-beam and high-beam-to-high-beam as long as you get the pin orientation correct. However, you'll only get 1 low beam and 1 high beam and won't be using the lights to their full potential.
Factory quads & Depos use and H4 bulb for the low beam and H1 bulb for the high beam. H4 bulbs are dual function meaning it does both high and low beam. H1 is single function, or high beam only. With the factory halogen quads and Depos when wired correctly, you'll have a single low beam and DOUBLE high beams.
With the quads, if you change out the inner H1 high beam light to an H4 housing/bulb, you have the ability to run DOUBLE low and DOUBLE high beams for maximum light output. This is a big advantage of quad headlights. Not only are there a ton of aftermarket light options, but you also have the ability to double the light output.
Why does your harness need a relay?
Older Toyota vehicles have a peculiar lighting system. The low beams are positive-switched and the high beams are negative- switched. Because of the polarity differences in how the lights are switched, you cannot simply send power from the low and high beam into an H4 plug and expect it to work. The low beams will work but the high beams will not! This is where my harness comes in. The relay acts as a "switch" for the high beams so that everything works correctly with the reverse polarity.
Can I run double low/double high with my quads?
Yes, but you need to change the inner high beam light fixture/housing. As explained above, OEM quads with the factory halogen lights use H4 (dual function) for the low beam position and H1 (single function) for the high beam position. Being that H1 bulbs are single function, it cannot work for low beam and high beam. It's one or the other. H1 housings are different so you can't simply put an H4 bulb in there. You can however replace the entire housing with an aftermarket H4 4x6 glass housing. Once you do so, you're able to run double low/double high since you'll have H4 bulbs in each housing.
What if i change my mind on double low or want to run different lights later?
All of my harnesses configured for double low/double high. This harness will work even if using the halogen H4/H1 factory quads. As configured you'll get single low/double high. If you ever change out the inner light for an H4 housing, it will be ready to go for double low/double high. If you change your mind and don't want double low anymore, all you need to do is pull the low beam positive pin from the corresponding H4 plug and insulate it well.
Will this work on my JDM import?
Depends. Japanese market Land Cruisers came in a couple different configurations. For example, some models have a yellow fog light where the inner high beam normally is. This fog light is controlled by a separate switch on the dash. The outer light is an H4 bulb and handles both low beam and high beam duties. I have not yet seen one of these truck in person to confirm wiring and polarity switching. I have an idea of how to make the harness, but have not done so yet. If you're interested, please reach out so we can discuss.
What lights do you recommend?
This isn't a simple answer because everybody has different budgets. However no matter what, I will always recommend replacing the halogen bulbs with LEDs even if using the factory housings. LEDs will run much cooler than halogens and will draw less power. Lasfit and Auxbeam seem to be popular choices for affordable LED bulbs. If you want to change out the entire housing, options are endless. However before you spend any money, do yourself a favor and watch this 4x6 headlight comparison video made by Headlight Revolution.
